Queer History Bookmark | Bury the Gays in Kisses

from $1.50

The message on this bookmark is a reference to the Bury Your Gays trope. Haley Hulan explains that "Bury Your Gays is a literary trope that has appeared in media across genre [sic] since the end of the 19th century. Works using the trope will feature a same-gender couple and with one of the lovers dying and the other realizing they were never actually gay, often running into the arms of a heterosexual partner. This trope was originally used as a way for gay authors to write about gay characters without coming under fire for breaking laws and social mandates against the “endorsement” of homosexuality..." (Bury Your Gays: History, Usage, and Context, 2017).

This design celebrates how far we've come in terms of media representation without forgetting where we have been as a community.

This bookmark is made out of 14-point cardstock with color printing on both sides and a protective UV gloss coating, which makes for a sturdy bookmark. And at two inches wide by eight inches long it is long enough to poke a bit out of most books for easy page-finding without sticking out far enough to be vulnerable to folding or other damage.

They are also printed locally to Stet Studio in Pittsburgh, which means by purchasing a bookmark you can support both Stet Studio and another small business!

First Grade versus Second Grade

This product has some Seconds available! ‘A Second Grade’, or Seconds, is one that ended up slightly less than perfect (aren’t we all?) during the manufacturing process, but is still completely usable. This might mean the coloring of a page is slightly off, or something is a little bit crooked.

We have decided at Stet Studio, to still offer these items for sale at a 50% discount so they can be enjoyed by those who don’t mind their imperfections. It’s a great way for you to get a deal, and for us to produce less waste!

To choose a Seconds item, simply click the button that says ‘Second Grade’ on it as well as selecting any other variations that may be available for this product.
